Announcing the Athletic Lab Academy

After over a year of tireless work, we are excited to officially launch Athletic Lab Academy. The Academy is an upgrade and rebrand of the highly successful Athletic Lab Mentorship program. The Mentorship program has been taught around the world to hundreds of coaches including the Performance staffs of legendary international sports teams like Palmeiras, Coritiba FC, and Vitória S.C.

More than just a renaming, Athletic Lab Academy will make our coaching education initiatives accessible to more coaches anywhere in the world.

Restructuring

The Athletic Lab Academy will operate as a branch of Athletic Lab. What was previously known as Athletic Lab Mentorships will now be known as the Certified High Performance Coach (CHPC) pathway. The CHPC will be the primary education resource of the Athletic Lab Academy.

Previously, the Mentorship was offered in 3 phases:

Phase 1 – Performance Coach
Phase 2 – High Performance Coach
Phase 3 – Elite Performance Coach

Moving forward, we will continue to offer 3 levels of education. Prior graduates of our Mentorship program will be awarded recognition at the accompanying Level in the new format.

Now Available Online

Effective immediately, the CHPC L1 will be offered only in an online course format. We have invested heavily to ensure the quality of content and delivery experience. The 15 module course will cover every topic that was previously addressed in our popular Phase 1 Mentorship.

Most coaches stop sets based on how athletes look, rather than how they are actually moving. VBT allows you to set a simple cutoff by monitoring bar speed. A bar speed drop of more than 20% from the first rep is an indicator that no matter how the athlete looks or what percentage of 1RM they are supposed to be moving, that they are fatigued beyond the necessary output they need to reach the target stimulus. We shut down the set so that we don’t keep the athlete accumulating a bunch of junk reps.

We know there are weight room activities - squats, cleans, plyos, etc that contribute to speed development but we also know that these activities don’t come close enough to the intensity of forces and contraction speeds seen during a max velocity sprint. Therefore the best way to become faster is…..to sprint.

To reach a proper stimulus, sprinting must be done at 95%+ of the athletes max velocity. Do not confuse this with EFFORT. An athlete can be at an RPE of 10 yet not sprinting at 95%+ of their max velocity. So even if an athlete is running fast, even running as fast as they can, it doesn’t mean they are sprinting.
