Jack Flood represents USA places 4th in Thorpe Cup

Multi-event athlete Jack Flood represented the USA in finishing 4th at the prestigious Thorpe Cup Decathlon in Germany. Flood is a member of the Athletic Lab Track Club. Jack qualified for Team USA on the merit of his 8th place finish in the Decathlon at the USA Track & Field Outdoor National Championships in Des Moines, IA.

The Thorpe Cup is an annual international decathlon and heptathlon contested between Germany and the USA. The event is named after the famous Olympic decathlete Jim Thorpe.

In Germany, Flood scored 7,601 points on his way to a 4th place finish. The performance marked Flood’s third time over the 7,600 point mark in 2019.

The Athletic Lab Track Club provides world class coaching and a supportive training environment for post-collegiate athletes as they pursue national and international competitive careers. The Athletic Lab Track Club has a long history of success at the elite level having produced multiple national champions and international competitors. This is particularly true in the heptathlon and decathlon. Athletic Lab Track Club boasts 5 athletes who have won National Championships or Masters National Championships and 1 who has won a Masters World Championship. Most notably, Eric Broadbent won the 2012 Indoor National Championships in the heptathlon with a score of 5,908. Broadbent later went on to compete in the 2012 Olympic Olympic trials. Also, Jef Souza is the current American Masters record holder in the Pentathlon in 2 age categories. Souza has won multiple National and World Championships in the multi-events.

Patrick reached a major milestone, earning a Grand Slam main draw victory with an impressive four-set win over fellow American Mackenzie McDonald, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Patrick advanced to the second round before facing world No. 6 Taylor Fritz on Court 2 at the All England Club. While Fritz earned the victory, Patrick battled throughout the match and showcased the level of play that has made him one of the country`s top rising professionals.

Most coaches stop sets based on how athletes look, rather than how they are actually moving. VBT allows you to set a simple cutoff by monitoring bar speed. A bar speed drop of more than 20% from the first rep is an indicator that no matter how the athlete looks or what percentage of 1RM they are supposed to be moving, that they are fatigued beyond the necessary output they need to reach the target stimulus. We shut down the set so that we don’t keep the athlete accumulating a bunch of junk reps.

We know there are weight room activities - squats, cleans, plyos, etc that contribute to speed development but we also know that these activities don’t come close enough to the intensity of forces and contraction speeds seen during a max velocity sprint. Therefore the best way to become faster is…..to sprint.

To reach a proper stimulus, sprinting must be done at 95%+ of the athletes max velocity. Do not confuse this with EFFORT. An athlete can be at an RPE of 10 yet not sprinting at 95%+ of their max velocity. So even if an athlete is running fast, even running as fast as they can, it doesn’t mean they are sprinting.
