What do you do when you’re not working out at Athletic Lab (occupation, hobbies, etc) I work for The Wooten Agency (my Dad’s insurance agency) selling health insurance. I have worked for my dad for 5 years and will take over the business when he decides to retire. I worked for my husband who is the Director of Tennis at Prestonwood Country Club for 23 years, so tennis became my hobby instead of my work after I left Prestonwood. I played Div 1 tennis at ECU many, many years ago, so tennis has always been a big part of my life. I also like to plant flowers in my yard and do anything outdoors!
How did you first hear about Athletic Lab? How long have you been a member? I joined AL in February of 2013. At the time, two of my children were very active in CrossFit and encouraged me to just try it. I had seen the Cary CrossFit sign on the outside of the building and stopped by one day to find out about classes. I had been looking for somewhere to workout but had not found a gym I was excited about. I had never participated in anything like CrossFit. I never even knew anything about cleans, snatches or even a squat!!! I fell in love with the variety of the workouts and how it made me feel. I love the CrossFit community and how it is so encouraging and how you can measure your progress against yourself and at the same time have someone there beside you struggling through the same workout. I love the way it has made me a better person and pushed me beyond what I ever thought I could do.
Favorite class/time to workout 6am CrossFit is my favorite class, although I am not consistent with attending at that time. I enjoy the endurance classes as well, especially the Saturday class.
Favorite Athletic Lab event/race The Healthy Living Challenge has made the most difference in my life so far. I am learning how to eat for better performance and weight loss as well. I love the support you get from Stephanie and all of the other participants through the Facebook group.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least favorite I really like anything to do with weight lifting. I have never done it before and there is so much to learn. The lifts are very intriguing to me. Least favorite are probably Turkish Get Ups.
Is there anything you have done at Athletic Lab that you never thought you could do I have always wanted to take part in the CrossFit games. The first time they had a scaled division was 2015, so I decided to sign up and compete in 2016. I was amazed at how well I did in my scaled age group of Master’s 60+. I finished 324/1211 in the world and 26/99 in the mid south.
What is the biggest difference you have seen in yourself since starting at Athletic Lab I am amazed how dedicated I am to coming to class. Usually after awhile, things seem to fade or not be so fun, but not with Athletic Lab. The workouts are always different, so it never gets old. The staff at AL is also a huge part of why I continue to show up. They are very interested in how you are progressing and I feel like they are always looking out for me with something that will help me succeed without feeling like I failed to do Rx. The simplest “see you tomorrow” or “great job” motivates you to show up.
What motivates you Again, it is the staff and the CrossFit community that has become my second family and why I show up everyday ready to try my hardest to become better and stronger. I want to approach my senior years strong and doing everything I can to keep moving and to stay active!!
