After almost 2 years away, Athletic Lab founder Mike Young has returned to resume coaching and directing the sport science research and training center in Cary, NC. Young left in March 2012 to join the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS as the fitness coach and sport science performance director. In 2012, the Whitecaps became the first Canadian team to make the MLS Cup playoffs. In 2013, Young was joined by Athletic Lab coach, John Grace. During that season, the team improved on its record from 2012 and won the coveted Cascadia Cup from regional rivals Portland Timbers and the Seattle Sounders. During his time in Vancouver, the club became one of the fastest and fittest teams in the league. In addition to soccer specific training and conditioning, Young implemented a comprehensive player monitoring and readiness system and brought many of the nutritional, wellness, and training methods used at Athletic Lab to the MLS. Young will continue to work with the Whitecaps assisting in the development of the sport science initiatives he implemented.
