Phase One Athletic Lab Mentorship in São Paulo, Brazil

Athletic Lab, in partnership with ELITE Training, held a Phase 1 international mentorship on the first weekend in December. Almost 40 coaches attended the course in São Paulo, Brazil. São Paulo is the most populous city in Brazil and the largest Portuguese speaking city in the world.

ELITE Training is one of the largest coaching education companies in the world. Athletic Lab has been working with ELITE Training since 2017 to bring the three phase course to Portugal and Brazil.

The mentorship provides an in-depth understanding of the Athletic Lab training philosophy. Our mentorship covers both the underlying sports science and practical applications. The course is modeled after our on-site coaching mentorship program. The mentorship combines academic and experiential learning to prepare sport performance and fitness coaches to excel. Athletic Lab is recognized as a world leader for coaching education. We provide online and in-person lectures and seminars around the world.

Hundreds of coaches in Portugal, Brazil, Turkey and Taiwan have taken our international mentorship course this year. The course has been delivered to many of the top coaches in the world including the entire physical preparation staffs of Palmeiras Soccer Club and Vit ria de Guimar es Soccer Club.

Graduates of the recent 3 day course are eligible to attend the second and third phases of the course. Each phase builds on the previous one with more advanced concepts and applications. The third phase is a truly immersive experience. We host the third phase on-site at the Athletic Lab headquarters in North Carolina, USA.

Most coaches stop sets based on how athletes look, rather than how they are actually moving. VBT allows you to set a simple cutoff by monitoring bar speed. A bar speed drop of more than 20% from the first rep is an indicator that no matter how the athlete looks or what percentage of 1RM they are supposed to be moving, that they are fatigued beyond the necessary output they need to reach the target stimulus. We shut down the set so that we don’t keep the athlete accumulating a bunch of junk reps.

We know there are weight room activities - squats, cleans, plyos, etc that contribute to speed development but we also know that these activities don’t come close enough to the intensity of forces and contraction speeds seen during a max velocity sprint. Therefore the best way to become faster is…..to sprint.

To reach a proper stimulus, sprinting must be done at 95%+ of the athletes max velocity. Do not confuse this with EFFORT. An athlete can be at an RPE of 10 yet not sprinting at 95%+ of their max velocity. So even if an athlete is running fast, even running as fast as they can, it doesn’t mean they are sprinting.
