Why You Should Be Doing Self Myofascial Release by Robert Schurtman

One variant of it that has gained popularity is self-myofascial release. It has become a popular modality that provides many benefits to athletes and gym goers alike. It’s used in a multitude of sports for different applications, whether that be part of a warm up or cool down. Self-myofascial release, or SMR, is a massage technique that can be done to oneself using a massaging implement such as a lacrosse ball or a foam roller and a person’s own body weight. A person applies pressure to their muscles with their own weight on the massaging tool to relieve tension. While there is still a lot of discourse involving SMR, specifically about the appropriate prescription for it, the benefits of SMR speak for themselves. Along with the more commonly known benefits of increased range of motion (ROM) / flexibility and enhancing recovery, SMR provides even lesser-known benefits as further explained in this post. How does it work? Before we get into the benefits, let’s first understand how exactly SMR works. To start, we need some background information about the muscles in the body. Each muscle has two mechanoreceptors that help with contraction and extension of the muscle: the Golgi tendon organ (GTO) and the muscle spindle. Peristaltic Pulse Dynamic Compression by Liam Sutton

He is currently participating in the Athletic Lab Internship Program.] Athletes have always looked for advantages in training and competition to obtain an edge over their competition. The scientific and performance coaching communities have ongoing collaboration in enhancing athlete performance; methods include using optimized training schedules, better nutrition, higher quality sleep, and emerging forms of therapy. The goals of these collaborations are to enhance performance of athletes by reducing fatigue and soreness as well as enhance and accelerate sport specific training adaptations. Elite athletes undergo rigorous training that leads to muscle microtrauma and inflammation, manifesting itself in pain, discomfort, and short-term performance decreases. Reducing, counteracting, and recovering from these body traumas is the primary goal of many emerging therapies aimed at athletes. The sport world is rapidly embracing therapeutic arts and sciences to obtain the benefits of recovery methods designed to combat the entire spectrum of fatigue related performance impairments. This is evidenced by national Olympic, business, and other organizational entities building expensive facilities designed around the research and implementation of recovery modalities and methods to enhance recovery and adaptation. Is Strength Training More Valuable than Stretching? by Ansley Bucknam

Ansley hopes to pursue physical therapy school following the completion of her undergraduate degree.] Myth #1: You should stretch as part of your warm up. Static stretching has been utilized in warmups for both general fitness and high level athletics for decades. As a health and fitness community, we are starting to develop a better idea of when to stretch and when to not stretch. Warm ups are a crucial part of one's workout routine and as a healthcare professional, I want you to be at your best before going into a challenging workout. Current research suggests that static stretching may do more harm than good prior to a workout that requires strength and/or power production (aka most workouts). Unfortunately, it is still utilized in many exercise programs as an adequate warm up. The best way to prepare for any intense activity is just to start easy and steadily dial-up the intensity? (Ingraham 2020). Warmups should also elevate core body temperature. Static stretching falls short in both of these arenas, as it does not mimic the workout and typically does not increase body temperature all that much. The Bread-and-Butter of Flexibility Training by Greg Gustin

Greg is participating in the coaching mentorship program at Athletic Lab.] Recently, I attended a camp called "Movement X" led by the Ido Portal team. If you're unfamiliar, Ido really is a student and teacher of the human body and everything it is capable of doing. I was participating as someone interested in any and all movement, and in gaining new perspective to take back to collegiate strength and conditioning. Toward the end of the second day, I asked how their students are able to achieve such impressive and useful flexibility. The answer was simple. Loaded progressive stretching is our bread and butter. Much of what we had done that weekend fell under this category, but I didn't realize it until far later. In fact, I took that bit of information with me and thought it over for quite some time before really understanding what it meant. It sounded like some advanced technique when their practitioner said it, but the concept is quite simple - achieve a stretched position under load, progress, and repeat. How it Works The general idea behind loaded progressive stretching is to put tissues into an elongated position under load. The load is meant to further the stretch slightly beyond what might be possible in a passive manner and act as a stimulus to the myofascial elements that are under tension. Saturday Mobility Classes Cancelled for Remainder of May

Due to staffing constraints, Athletic Lab is temporarily cancelling our Saturday Mobility classes. Mobility is a once a week class available as part of our Performance Fitness Membership. There will be no Saturday 10am Mobility Class on May 14th, 21st or 28th. Members may be interested in our Sunday Yoga class as an alternative. The class takes place on Sundays at 9:30am. We expect the class to return in June and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Examining the Role of Stretching by Pierrie Miller

[Pierrie Miller is an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab] Stretching. It's something that most individuals are introduced to at a young age, especially those who've played sports. One of the most common forms of stretching used during the warm-up is the static stretch. Often, athletes don't question the reason why they are stretching, they are just told that it's required. This form of stretching involves holding the stretched muscle in the relaxed position for 10-30 seconds (and sometimes longer). My question is: how important is it to include static stretching in your warm-up? Specifically, when training athletes who will conduct large explosive movements through a full range of motion in their training or sport. Seemingly, it would be more appropriate to implement a warm-up routine that better prepares the athlete for those specific movements that are used during competition/training. This is where I recommend dynamic stretching, conducting movements that allow the joints to functionally pass through the full range of motion (Nadelen, 2012). Dynamic stretching better prepares the body for activity by allowing the muscles to "get warm" in preparation for exercise. Static stretching is not all bad and it can be used during the warm up on certain occasions, but only after light jogging or other movements that warm the muscles that are intended to be stretched. When Bingul (2014) tested the optimal interval time for peak performance using a dynamic stretching protocol, he found within the study that those individuals in the dynamic stretching routine group showed a 14% peak performance increase within the hamstring complex when compared to the group that did not conduct a stretching routine.
