Athletic Lab Combined Events Athletes Excel

Three decathletes from the Athletic Lab Track Club recently competed in national and international competitions. Devin Cornelius and Jack Flood competed at the Pan American Cup decathlon in Ottawa, Canada. The event took place as part of the Canadian National Championships and featured some of the top multi-venters in North America. Both had strong first days in the 2 day event. After the first day, Devin stood in 3rd place and Flood in 6th place. After Day 2, Flood finished the event in 3rd place with a personal best score of 7,376. This is the second best score in club history. Despite a no-height in the pole vault on Day 2, Cornellius completed the event with a strong overall showing. The club's longest standing and most decorated member, Jef Souza, also turned in a great decathlon. Souza competed at the 2018 National Masters Combined Event Championships where he won the event with the top score (7,055) of all age categories. Jef has been training with Coach Mike Young since 2008 and holds six American records and has won seven World Championships.

Jef Souza wins 7 National Championships

Athletic Lab elite masters Track & Field athlete Jef Souza recently added to his trove of National Championship medals. At the recent USATF Masters National Championships in Baton Rouge, LA; Jef won 7 individual gold medals, 1 silver medal and 4 bronze in the 40-44 age division. He took home individual event wins in the Pentathlon, 110m Hurdles, Long Jump, Pole Vault, and High Jump. He added relay wins in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay and the 4 x 400m relay (where he competed alongside former Athletic Lab athlete Allen Woodard). Souza also took home a silver medal in the Javelin Throw and 4 bronze medals in the Hammer Throw, Discus Throw, Shot Put and 4 x 100m relay. Jef is among the most decorated athletes to train with Athletic Lab, having won multiple national championships every year since 2011. Souza, who typically competes as a decathlete, is a multi-time national champion, a world champion in the decathlon, and a national record holder. Jef Souza wins Decathlon National Championship

Athletic Lab athlete Jef Souza recently won another National Championship in a multi-event at the 2017 US Masters Track & Field Outdoor National Championships. Souza is a national record holder and multi-time national and international champion in the pentathlon, indoor heptathlon and decathlon who has trained with Athletic Lab's Mike Young as part of the Track & Field team for 8 years. Souza scored 7,062 points in the 2 day decathlon to win the men's 40-44 division of the championships. Jef Souza wins Multiple USATF National Championships and awarded Athlete of the Year

Long time Athletic Lab athlete Jef Souza won 3 National Championships at the 2016 US Masters Track & Field Outdoor National Championships in Grand Rapids, MI. Jef is among the most decorated athletes to train with Athletic Lab, having won multiple national championships every year since 2011. Souza is a multi-time national champion, a world champion in the decathlon, and a national record holder. At the 2016 US Masters Track & Field Outdoor National Championships, Souza won the 110m Hurdles (15.59 seconds) and the Pentathlon (3,339 points) in the men's 40-44 year age category. While at the meet he was also recognized as the top Masters track & field athlete for 2015. In 2015, Souza won 5 national championships.

Jef Souza wins 3 National Championships

Athletic Lab athlete Jef Souza recently won 3 National Championships at the 2015 US Masters Track & Field Outdoor National Championships. This brings his national title haul to 5 in 2015 as he also won 2 National Championships at the US Masters Track & Field Indoor National Championships. Souza is a multi-time national champion, a world champion in the decathlon, and a national record holder. At the 2015 US Masters Track & Field Outdoor National Championships, Souza won the 110m Hurdles (15.72 seconds), the Shot Put (12.32m), and the Pentathlon (3,152 points) in the men's 40-44 year age category. He also placed second in the Discus throw (34.23m).

Jef Souza wins 3 National Championships

Athletic Lab Masters Track & Field athlete won three national championships at the USA Track & Field Masters Indoor National Championships held in Winston-Salem, NC on March 20th-22nd. Souza won national championships in the long jump, 60m hurdles and pentathlon less than a month after winning a national championship in the heptathlon in Kenosha, WI. Jef also took second place in the shot put. Souza competes in the 40-44 year old age bracket and is a world champion, multi-time national champion and national record holder. Jef Souza resides in Miami but has been coached by Athletic Lab's Dr. Mike Young for the past 5 years as part of Athletic Lab's correspondence training team and is a regular visitor to Athletic Lab.
