December Member of the Month: Patrick Kypson

Patrick Kypson is the December 2025 Athletic Lab Member of the Month, recognized for a breakout season on the ATP Challenger Tour, a major jump in his world ranking, and a committed return to high-level play after injury. His consistency on court and professionalism in the gym embody the performance standards Athletic Lab strives to cultivate in every athlete. You can read about previous members of the month here. Breakthrough 2025 season In 2025, Kypson put together the best season of his professional career, highlighted by four ATP Challenger titles, including a hard-fought win over home favorite Otto Virtanen in Helsinki. He also added Challenger trophies in Bogotá, Little Rock, and Sioux Falls, stacking ranking points and proving he can win on different surfaces and in different environments.[2][6][4] Ranking rise and consistency On the back of those results, Kypson climbed from outside the top 200 at the end of 2024 to a career-best year-end singles ranking of No. 117 in 2025. That surge reflects a season where he turned a nearly even win-loss record in 2024 into an impressive 45–15 mark in 2025 across ITF, Challenger, and ATP events. Ranking progress snapshot Season Year-end singles ranking Match record (all pro) 2024 212 [1] 26–27 [7] 2025 117 [1] 45–15 [7] Overcoming injury and setbacks Kypson’s 2025 campaign is even more notable given that it followed a recent injury to his foot that required surgery and disrupted his competition schedule and training rhythm. Returning to form required disciplined rehab work, gradual load progression, and a renewed emphasis on physical preparation so he could tolerate the demands of deep tournament runs week after week. Standard-setting presence at Athletic Lab At Athletic Lab, Kypson brings the [...]

Unlocking Athletic Potential: The Power of Sport Performance Training for High School Athletes

High school represents a critical window for athletic development. During these formative years, young athletes are primed to make significant gains in speed, strength, and conditioning that will serve them throughout their athletic careers and beyond. At Athletic Lab, we understand that comprehensive sport performance training isn't just about improving game statistics—it's about building a foundation for lifelong fitness, injury prevention, and peak athletic achievement. Why High School Athletes Need Specialized Performance Training The teenage years mark a unique period of rapid physical development. Growth spurts, hormonal changes, and neurological maturation create an optimal environment for athletic adaptation. However, without proper guidance and structured training, young athletes may miss this crucial developmental window or, worse, develop movement patterns that increase injury risk. Traditional high school sports programs, while valuable for skill development and team building, often lack the comprehensive approach needed to maximize athletic potential. This is where dedicated sport performance training becomes invaluable, addressing the three pillars of athletic excellence: speed development, strength training, and conditioning. The Speed Advantage: More Than Just Running Fast Speed training extends far beyond simply running faster in a straight line. For high school athletes, comprehensive speed development encompasses: Acceleration and Deceleration Learning to efficiently accelerate from stationary positions and safely decelerate during direction changes is crucial for sports like basketball, soccer, and football. Proper acceleration mechanics can shave tenths of seconds off sprint times—the difference between making and missing a game-changing play. Agility and Change of Direction Multi-directional speed training improves an athlete's ability to cut, pivot, and react quickly to game situations. These skills translate directly to better defensive positioning, more effective offensive moves, and reduced injury risk during unpredictable game scenarios. Reaction Time and First Step [...]

Athletic Lab Performance Fitness Revamp: FAQs (Part 3)

Get ready for a new era of Performance Fitness at Athletic Lab! Starting July 21, we’re launching a refreshed class structure and delivery method for our adult fitness programs. While our class schedule remains unchanged, you’ll experience a more engaging, effective, and varied approach designed to elevate your results and enhance your experience. To learn more about the updates, check out the first two posts (1 & 2) in our blog series. Here, we’re answering your most common questions about what’s changing and what to expect: Program Wide Changes The changes we've made are limited to programming and assessments. The overall membership and schedule will remain the same for the foreseeable future. Will the schedule change? No. We have no plans to change our current schedule of classes. All class types within the Performance Fitness membership will occur at the same frequency and on our existing schedule. Will pricing change? No. All membership pricing remains the same for the foreseeable future. Do I need to do anything different? Nope. Just show up. As always, consistency is key to your success. You keep showing up and we'll take care of the rest. Why are you making changes? We wanted to design an program that would balance consistency with variety. Specifically, we wanted to ensure that the qualities that benefit from repeated planned and progressive exposures (like strength and skill) were given the consistency to progress. And in those physical qualities where variety is not only more permissible but advantageous (like in metabolic conditioning) we wanted to make sure it was present in a way that was safe and challenging. Where can I find the workouts? All Performance Fitness members will have access to the daily [...]

Athletic Lab Performance Fitness Revamp: Fitness Standards (Part 2)

Athletic Lab is thrilled to announce a comprehensive overhaul of our Performance Fitness class programming. While our class schedule remains unchanged, we are introducing a new structure and delivery method for our adult fitness classes to deliver an enhanced training experience for every member. The updated programming launches on July 21. Prioritizing Healthspan in Fitness Training A core feature of our new approach is a targeted focus on the key performance indicators (KPIs) that drive healthspan. Healthspan refers to the period of life spent in good health and optimal physical function. Leading neuroscientist Andrew Huberman emphasizes that healthspan is not just about longevity, but about maximizing quality of life and physical capability as we age. Our revamped Performance Fitness membership is designed to improve and assess the most critical components of healthspan, including: Muscle strength Muscle mass Cardiovascular capacity Measuring Progress: Track What Matters By identifying the most important KPIs for health and performance, our programming enables you to focus your training where it counts. We believe that “you can’t improve what you don’t track,” so we are increasing opportunities for members to monitor their progress through regular check-ins. This does not mean every session is a test or competition. In fact, we are reducing the frequency of tracked or competition-style workouts. Instead, our emphasis is on a select group of KPIs that are proven indicators of health and performance. Introducing the Athletic Lab Adult Fitness Standards Drawing from exercise science research, military and civil service fitness standards, and our extensive database of performance benchmarks, we have developed the Athletic Lab Adult Fitness Standards. These standards allow both members and non-members to benchmark their fitness across gender, age, and experience levels. Our fitness standards serve as a valuable resource for: [...]

How Will AI Become a Sports Science Tool? by Sims Setser

[This is a guest blog by Sims Setser. Sims is pursuing a BS in Kinesiology, while completing a Sports Science and Performance Coaching Mentorship at Athletic Lab.] The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries across the board, and sports science is no exception. From performance analysis to injury prevention and rehabilitation, AI holds significant potential to revolutionize the way athletes are trained and managed. By leveraging big data and machine learning algorithms, sports scientists can offer deeper insights into an athlete's performance, health, and overall well-being, leading to more personalized and effective training programs. However, AI’s rapid adoption also brings challenges, including data privacy risks, ethical concerns, and financial barriers that may limit accessibility. The Intersection of AI and Sports Science Sports science has traditionally relied on the combination of empirical research and practical experience to improve athletic performance. However, with the massive amounts of data now being generated by wearables, video analysis, and other technology, analyzing and interpreting this data can be an overwhelming task. This is where AI steps in. Machine learning algorithms can process vast quantities of information, detecting patterns and relationships that might not be immediately apparent to humans. In doing so, AI can enhance traditional sports science methods by making them more precise and efficient. Performance Monitoring and Enhancement One of the most exciting areas where AI is expected to make a significant impact is in performance monitoring and enhancement. Traditionally, sports scientists would analyze an athlete’s performance based on a combination of manual observation, video footage, and periodic testing. With AI, this can be taken to a whole new level. Advanced AI-driven systems can now analyze movement patterns in real-time, using data from wearable devices, GPS systems, and [...]
