Static stretching has been utilized in warmups for both general fitness and high level athletics for decades. As a health and fitness community, we are starting to develop a better idea of when to stretch and when to not stretch. Warm ups are a crucial part of one's workout routine and as a healthcare professional, I want you to be at your best before going into a challenging workout. Current research suggests that static stretching may do more harm than good prior to a workout that requires strength and/or power production (aka most workouts). Unfortunately, it is still utilized in many exercise programs as an adequate warm up. The best way to prepare for any intense activity is just to start easy and steadily dial-up the intensity? (Ingraham 2020). Warmups should also elevate core body temperature. Static stretching falls short in both of these arenas, as it does not mimic the workout and typically does not increase body temperature all that much. Dynamic stretching, as opposed to static, should be utilized in warmups as - it increases the suppleness of and blood flow to the muscles, raises body temperature, and enhances free, coordinated movement [...]

Post-Activation Potentiation by Austin Both

[Austin Both is the Associate Performance Director of Athletic Lab] Post-activation potentiation (PAP) is a phrase and concept commonly known amongst most coaches. For athletes and other fitness enthusiasts; however, it might sound like some overly complex term used in an attempt to sound qualified. Although it sounds highly technical, its definition is relatively simple. PAP can be defined as "a phenomenon by which the force exerted by a muscle is increased due to its previous contraction" (Robbins, 2005). In practical terms, this essentially means that following a rapid and forceful contraction, you are capable of producing greater force. As a result, we can harness this effect and use it to our advantage in a multitude of ways. The first and simplest consideration would be exercise order in a session. While there are many factors that cause coaches to program power-based movements early in the session, PAP can be considered amongst them. While we want to prioritize these movements, such as weightlifting patterns, jumps, throws, swings, etc. due to cognitive demands and the quality decrement that fatigue would place upon them, they can also enhance the training that is to follow. Beginning a session with something like a clean pll or a power clean can cause a PAP effect on the ensuing lower body movements, allowing for great force production and subsequently greater strength gains. Similar to exercise order throughout a session, exercises can be advantageously paired together for a positive effect. The aim of these pairings is to elicit improved outcomes for force, power, and rate of force development, both in an acute sense and for long-term adaptations (Hodgson et al., 2005). Using Warm-ups To Assess Overtraining by Gerard Teague

[Gerard Teague is a Kinesiology student at the University of Central Oklahoma and is an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab.] A properly designed warm-up can be an important subjective tool used for assessing overtraining. Before we talk about how to use the warm-up we must first understand the difference between fatigue, overreaching and overtraining. Fatigue can be viewed as a normal part of the training process that happens when stress is applied to the body. As a coach, we have to understand the difference between day to day or acute fatigue and chronic fatigue which is long lasting and can lead to overreaching and overtraining (1). A short-term decrement in performance due to either a planned phase of loading or a result of the accumulation of fatigue resulting form training can be viewed as overreaching. Overtraining on the other hand is a long-term decrement in training that can take weeks to months to recover on depending on the severity (1). One of the many concerns with identifying overtraining is being able to assess many of the signs and symptoms related to it. The markers used to identify overtraining include hormonal, biochemical, immunological and neuromuscular tests, some of which can be time consuming and expensive (2,3). To solve this problem, the athlete could use a performance test to assess how there monitoring fatigue before overtraining ever becomes an issue. Sprints and vertical jump tests can easily be incorporated after the warmup to assess fatigue. Both of which have been shown to be accurate markers of fatigue (1, 2).
