Young provides Hamstring lecture for Turkish Coaches

Athletic Lab's Dr. Mike Young recently provided a streaming course on Hamstring Training for Performance & Injury Prevention for Turkish strength and conditioning coaches. The streaming lecture series was hosted by Quadroathletics. The Turkish company is a regional leader in coaching education. The group hosted an Athletic Lab Coaching Academy CHPC Level 1 course in 2019 and a Level 2 course in 2021. Young discussed the most hamstring anatomy, injury etiology and evidence-based training interventions to improve performance in sport and reduce the likelihood of hamstring injuries. Mike Young presents at the Proformance Child to Champion Australia Conference

Athletic Lab's Dr. Mike Young recently lectured at the Child to Champion Australia virtual conference. The conference was hosted by Proformance Strength & Conditioning. The international conference has a long history of success in the UK. Proformance was slated to hold an event in the US for the first time in mid March at Athletic Lab. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 mandated closure cancelled the on-site plans and the conference was rescheduled as a virtual conference. A UK event and this Australian event were similarly changed to a virtual format in response to COVID-19. Young delivered "HamStrong - Examining hamstring injuries & what we can do to prevent them." The 2 day event featured an international lineup including Alex Natera, Sophia Nimphius and Lachlan Wilmot. Hamstring Strength and Flexibility Following a Strain by Vincent Ragland

He is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab] A hamstring strain is one of the most common injuries in all sports, specifically ones involving high intensity sprinting. Aside from the physical damage associated with a pulled hamstring, there are psychological damages associated with an injury as well. For example, a high-level sprinter who has strained their hamstring in the past will almost certainly never run a race again in their life without the thought of that pull being in the back of their mind. As with many injuries, the major problem associated with a hamstring injury is the risk of a re-injury, with nearly 30% of strains resulting in such. There seem to be two main reasons why researchers believe there is such a high prevalence of re-injury. For one, muscle tissue will not completely regenerate after a strain has occurred, and two, a weakness of the hamstring muscle or hamstring/quadriceps imbalance. After a hamstring strain occurs, scar tissue emerges in the location of the injury. The emergence of scar tissue increases the likelihood of re-injury and also limits the range of motion in a strained muscle. The most common mechanism of re-injury is when an athlete returns back to sport before the injury is completely healed and fully functioning. A study by Brian Cammarota shows that nearly 83 percent of hamstring re-injuries occur because an athlete attempts to return too soon.
