Resistance Training in Youth Physical Development

With the return of the Lab Rats program to our Long Term Athletic Development service continuum, it's important to highlight the benefits of exercise in general, but specifically resistance training, for children. The Role of Physical Activity and Resistance Training Childhood inactivity has reached all-time highs. In fact, obesity has reached epidemic proportions in modern society, posing serious physical and emotional risks for affected children. Recent data indicate that approximately 17.1% of youth aged 2 to 19 years are classified as obese, with an additional 33.6% at high risk of developing obesity (Ogden et al., 2014). Contributing factors include poor dietary habits and increased screen time from devices such as smartphones and tablets, which have led to a more sedentary lifestyle among children and adolescents (Andersen et al., 2017; Tremblay et al., 2011). The Importance of Physical Activity and Resistance Training for Children Physical activity, including resistance training, is a proven strategy for reducing body fat and improving overall health in children and adolescents. Research shows that structured exercise programs not only decrease adiposity but also enhance cardiovascular health, bone density, and motor skills (Faigenbaum et al., 2009; Strong et al., 2005). Despite these benefits, many parents remain concerned about the potential for resistance training to stunt growth or cause injury in young children. However, evidence indicates that when resistance training is properly designed and supervised by qualified professionals, it does not negatively impact growth or increase injury risk. In fact, such programs can have a positive influence on bone strength, motor development, and overall physical literacy (Faigenbaum et al., 2009; Lloyd et al., 2014). Athletic Lab’s Lab Rats Program Returns. Physical Literacy & Activity for Younger Children

Athletic Lab is excited to announce the return of our Lab Rats program. We launched the Lab Rats program in 2017 as the first step in our long term athletic development pipeline. This pipeline extends through our Scholastic Prep and Scholastic Sports Performance programs. After a 5 year absence, the program will return on Monday June 16th. Along with this growing interest has come an abundance of new perspectives on how to best work with children. Although researchers have looked at the safety and effectiveness of youth exercise programs there is still plenty of misinformation, and many parents are left wondering what is safe for their child.To complicate things, obesity in children is the worst it has ever been in our country. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, between the years 1999 and 2000, child and adolescent (ages 2-19) obesity was at 13.9%. In 2015 and 2016 that number rose to 18.5% and now obesity affects more than 13.7 million children and adolescents in the US. What's worse is that the prevalence of obesity in children increases as they get older. Childhood obesity is 13.9% from ages 2 thru 5, 18.4% from ages 6 thru 11, and 20.6% from ages 12 thru 19 (Hales, Carroll, Fryar, & Ogden, 2017). Weight Training for Preadolescents by Brandon Gremillion

[Brandon Gremillion is a student at the University of Mount Olive majoring in Exercise Science. He is currently an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab.] You may not think to use resistance training with weights in preadolescents, but there are many benefits to implementing it into a workout regime. A preadolescent is someone who usually falls between the ages of nine and twelve years of age. Utilizing weights during training for these individuals has not always been supported because of the concerns for injury and the questionable efficacy of this type of training to improve strength (Sibte, 2003). However, it has been shown that the combination of resistance training and cardio in regards to preadolescents can have long term health benefits (Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness [CSMF], 2001). This belief has further been backed up with research that has shown that, strength training, when properly structured with regard to frequency, mode (type of lifting), intensity, and duration of program can increase strength in preadolescents (Sibte, 2003). Resistance training with weights increases the risk of muscle strain and compression, but that risk is not as significant as the risk of injury associated with sports and recreational activity. In regards to preadolescents and resistance training the most common injuries seen are muscle strains, low back injury, and growth plate injuries (CSMF, 2001). Tendonitis can occur when a child is tasked with the high demands of competition and training without proper rest and recovery. Another issue that can arise is a diminished flexibility and muscle-tendon strength mismatches which in turn could cause injury (Sibte, 2003). Lab Rats: Date Night Edition

Have you and your significant other been wanting to go out with just the two of you or get together with some friends for a night out? Use this Lab Rats get-together as an opportunity to know that your kids are getting in some activity, a quality snack, and a movie with friends. The Lab Rats program offers kids the opportunity to develop basic physical competencies and general fitness in a fun and engaging environment. The goal is to empower children and promote a healthy lifestyle with physical activity. The class is designed to be challenging and fun with just the right amount of competitiveness. Here are a few important details: When: Friday February 24th @ 6:30 - 9:00pm Duration: 60 minutes of activity; 90 minutes of movies Ages: 4-9 years old Cost: $20 for the first child in the family; $12 for each additional child. Youth Physical Development Guidelines by Riley Rogers

[This is a guest blog by Riley Rogers. Riley is an Exercise and Sport Science major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab.] I strongly believe if I had started training for sports earlier in life, I would have been much more successful. Growing up, I dabbled in soccer, gymnastics, track and field, and basketball. By the time I got to high school, I decided to take on volleyball without any prior knowledge of the sport. Half of my high school volleyball career was spent mastering the fundamentals: bumping, setting, spiking, and footwork. I spent my junior year figuring out what position I was best at and, finally, I got to truly play competitively during my senior year. My point is, if I had started learning the fundamentals before high school, I would have had the opportunity to truly compete for four solid years...at least! The Lab Rats program at Athletic Lab gives kids aged 7-11 a head-start for future success by developing "fundamental skills that can be used in multiple sports and in everyday life"1. The participants spend an hour each class learning motor skills and correct exercise form, developing basic physical competencies, fostering relationships with other like-minded children, and having some good ol' fun. In a study done by Joseph Baker, he notes the significance of the 10-year rule. This rule stipulates that a 10-year commitment to high levels of training is the minimum requirement to reach the expert level (2). Lab Rats Kids program to begin February 15th with 2 weeks of FREE training

Starting February 15th Athletic Lab will be kicking off a new children's fitness class called Lab Rats. The motor education and physical literacy class will take place 3x a week at 5pm. The class is aimed at children aged 7-11 and will offer kids the opportunity to develop basic physical competencies and general fitness in a fun and engaging environment. Kids will do activities like climb ropes, push sleds, throw medicine balls, complete relay races, "play" on the rings, and so much more. The goal is to empower children and promote a healthy lifestyle with physical activity. Classes will be taught by coaches who carefully monitor correct exercise form and provide appropriate modifications when necessary. Just as importantly, our coaches will ensure kids have fun. The class will launch offering a FREE 2 week trial (between February 15-February 26) during which time sessions can purchased at a significant pre-sale discounted rate. Sessions may be purchased in 'punchcard' style packages of 10 or 20 sessions. Lab Rats: Childhood Physical Literacy Program

Obesity, specifically child obesity, has become an epidemic in our modern society. Currently, 17.1% of our youth aged two to 19 years old, are considered obese, with a shocking 33.6% not far behind, at high risk of becoming obese. Much of this is due to poor diet and the increased presence of phones, tablets and other substitutions for physical activity, creating a sedentary adolescent population. This can be extremely harmful for the future of these children, both physically and emotionally. Physical activity, including resistance training, has been proven as an effective means to decreasing the fatness in America's children and adolescents. (NSCA, 2008) Many parents have a misperception about the possibility of stunting growth or injuring their child during physical activity at a young age, specifically when it involves resistance training. This can be true, however not if the program is appropriately designed and supervised by responsible, educated coaches. Resistance training cannot decrease the genotypic maximum of an individual, meaning it will not affect the maximum height one was going to grow based on genetics. In fact, it has been proven to have a very favorable influence on growth, specifically on the strength of bones and improved motor skills (NSCA, 2008). As for future sport performance, beginning resistance training and participating in general physical activity programs in youth has been shown to produce more successful athletes in the future. It allows the child to develop fundamental skills that can be used in multiple sports and in everyday life.
