Athletic Lab hosts USA Powerlifting State Championships

Athletic Lab recently hosted the USA Powerlifting North Carolina State Championships. USA Powerlifting is known as America's choice for drug tested competitions. Powerlifting is one of the primary strength sports competed world wide and competitors compete in the squat, bench press and deadlift. Over 100 of the strongest lifters from the state of North Carolina converged on Athletic Lab to compete. Athletic Lab is no stranger to hosting large scale strength events. We have hosted three North Carolina Weightlifting State Championships (2013, 2014, 2016), the West Cary Barbell Festival of Power Strongman (2011), and 2 SuperFit Games competitions (both in 2015).

Why the Deadlift is for You: A Mechanical Analysis by Zach Chokr

He is currently an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab.] The deadlift is one of the truest measures of total body strength as it recruits muscles from all regions of the body from the ground up. On the surface, the goal of the deadlift is essentially to pick up some weight off the ground to an erect, standing position. While bending over and hoisting a weight off the floor may seem simple, form and technique can be different for each individual (DuVall, 2017). However, the complexity of this lift can be easily overlooked. Some of the most important factors of the deadlift, and any exercise for that matter, is not just strength but form and technique. In my last blog post, I talked about the high bar and low bar squat. Now I am going to introduce two basic forms of the deadlift, and how you can benefit the most dependent on a variety of factors including your goals. The conventional deadlift is performed with your feet roughly shoulder width apart, with your hands outside of them; whereas the sumo deadlift typically requires a wider stance, and hands placed on the bar between the feet. This difference in positioning places varying demands on the muscles. Escamilla et al. (2000) found that the primary lower extremity muscles involved during the conventional deadlifts are the hamstrings, gluteus maximus, gastrocnemius, and soleus, compared to the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, quadriceps, and tibialis anterior during the sumo deadlift using electromyography (EMG). Low Bar vs. High Bar Squat by Zach Chokr

He is currently an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab.] The squat has biomechanical and neuromuscular similarities to a wide range of athletic movements. Thus, it is one of the most frequently used exercises in the field of strength and conditioning; and is a core exercise designed to enhance athletic performance. In addition, it is an indispensable component of competitive weightlifting and powerlifting that is regarded as a cardinal test of lower-body strength (Schoenfeld, 2010, p. 3497). For some reason, the first question "gym bros" always seem to address is how much someone can bench press, but is that really defiant of your strength? There is no greater love-hate relationship than that of leg day; waking up in the morning with your legs so sore that you are forced to waddle helplessly like a penguin. But hey, on the bright side it shows you're working hard and I commend you for that. I promise, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. On the more technical side, once you are familiar with the back squat, there are variations that can be performed to adjust the angles and torques placed on the joints that affect the force applied to the low back, legs, and hip musculature by shifting the location of the bar on the back which can provide specific advantages to your personal goals. Josh Guillory wins NC Powerlifting Championships

Athletic Lab intern Joshua Guillory competed at the 2014 USAPL NC State Powerlifting Championships on 6/14/14. He placed 1st in the 75kg (165lbs) weight class out of ten (10) competitors. He had a 1223lb. total at 165 which ranks him nationally at #47 in the USA. Squat - 451, 479 which ranks him nationally at #14 in the USA, Bench Press - 236, 253, and Deadlift - 451,479, 490. Athletic Lab athletes dominate at SONC Qualifying Meet

Dennis Blair & Sam Volk competed at the Special Olympics of North Carolina Powerlifting qualifying event over the weekend. Dennis and Sam put on an impressive showing during the event coming in 1st & 2nd place, respectively. The meet consisted of bench press only. Dennis went 2 for 3 with a top weight of 190lbs in the lift. Sam went 3 for 3 with a top weight of 120lb in the lift. Both athletes qualified for the 2014 SONC Summer Games in May.

Technical Mastery: Developing Strength as a Skill by Joshua Guillory

[Joshua is an Exercise Science student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is an Athletic Development Intern for Athletic Lab] As a competitive powerlifter and strength enthusiast, I am fascinated by human feats of strength in the various strength sports such as olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, strongman, and highland games. The competitors that make up these sports are outliers compared to the general population. Most individuals will never have aspirations to achieve the levels of strength these athletes push their bodies too. The discussion I will entertain today is the concept of technical mastery and developing strength as a skill. As a competitive powerlifter with six (6) years of experience under the bar and competing at national meets, the strongest lifters I've come across have endured in this sport. They have put in many hours, days, weeks, months, and years of training to achieve impressive levels of strength in the power lifts (the squat, bench press, and deadlift). When someone asks me, "My current squat is 250lbs. How do I squat 500lbs" My response is typically always the same, "Put in a decade. Train for ten (10) years and see where you end up." Most of the time I get a look of confusion and a facial expression of "Are you kidding me" I don't literally mean you need to train for a decade to get strong(er). The point I am making is if you want to really be good at the basic barbell lifts (the squat, bench press, deadlift, the press, and power clean), you will have to put in time under the bar. I will acknowledge that the strongest and most muscular individuals I know have been training for over a decade [...]
