But there's one often-overlooked aspect that can have a significant impact on our mental and physical health: static stretching. While most of us are familiar with stretching as a warm-up or cool-down routine, the benefits of static stretching go beyond just flexibility. In this blog post, we'll delve into the evidence-based benefits of static stretching on wellbeing, drawing insights from peer-reviewed journals. Stress Reduction One of the most compelling benefits of static stretching is its ability to reduce stress. Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on both our physical and mental health. A study (Woods et al., 2013) published in the "Journal of Behavioral Medicine" in 2013 found that participants who engaged in regular static stretching experienced a significant decrease in perceived stress levels. Red Light Therapy: What it is and Uses for Athletes by Liam Sutton

In the Athletic Lab recovery room, athletes have access to a red light therapy apparatus. This blog post is intended to educate Athletic Lab athletes on what red light therapy is, why an athlete would use it, and how to utilize it for optimal results.  What is Red Light Therapy?  Red light therapy is a form of light therapy that uses red and/or near infrared light to stimulate cellular energy production. While we can see red light, infrared light is outside the visible spectrum, meaning our eyes cannot pick it up. Our inability to see it does not lessen its effects; however, as both red and infrared light have been shown to have a variety of positive effects on the human body which can be harnessed to improve athletic performance and recovery. Research has shown improvements in sleep and many aspects of sport performance. Some literature suggests faster recovery from training. Sleep Like You Mean It (Part 2) by Austin Both

[Austin Both is the Associate Performance Director of Athletic Lab] In last week's installment, we discussed the effects of cognition and physical capacity as a result of sleep deprivation. Perhaps, even more important than these aforementioned factors, is sleep's ability to keep us alive (quite literally). While there is not a single unanimous explanation as to why sleep is required for life, after tireless research, we do have a greater understanding of the physiological functions that make it so important (Harvard.edu). One such mechanism that affects cognition, mood, as well as our physical state, is the tendency for sleep deprivation to cause an increase in cortisol levels (INSEP, Hausswirth, Mujika, p.102). While natural fluctuations of cortisol are a natural and healthy response to stress, physical or otherwise, chronically elevated levels of cortisol can cause a host of negative effects. Sleep deprivation's effect on cortisol levels is likely less than clinical cases. However, it can still cause high blood pressure, weakness, as well as sub-optimal metabolism of carbohydrates leading to weight gain (Saladin, p. 673). Coupling with increased cortisol levels, disruption of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) can create even more issues in terms of energy and mood. The ANS often goes under the radar because we have no volitional control over its constituents; however, its control reaches numerous systems, including the endocrine system and cardiac muscle (Saladin, p.572). Lack of sleep can cause chronic hyperactivity of the sympathetic division of the ANS (INSEP, Hausswirth, Mujika, p.102), which is a state associated with excitation. As a result, this state will trigger consistently elevated heart rate and respiration (Saladin, p. 443.) This results in a dangerous duo with the aforementioned increased cortisol levels. [Austin Both is the Associate Performance Director of Athletic Lab] Although we are all experienced sleepers, that does not mean we are all proficient at the skill of sleeping. Very few of us place conscious thought into our sleeping habits beyond the goal of not being utterly exhausted the next day. As a result, we are missing out on a superpower for health, recovery, and vitality. Getting adequate sleep in the form of quality and quantity can improve immune function, vigor and energy, as well as improved gains in athletic endeavors (WebMd). Unfortunately, poor sleep can have the exact opposite effect. First, to lay the foundation, let us discuss what optimal sleep looks like in a general sense. We often hear that 8 hours should be our goal each night; however, this value is not always practical, nor does it take into account variance from individual to individual. An acceptable bandwidth could be considered anywhere from 6-10 hours, but each person will likely have their own sweet spot that must be determined. Furthermore, quality of the sleep is a vital variable to consider. In its simplest sense, high quality sleep consists of falling asleep relatively quickly, followed by minimal restlessness throughout the night. On a deeper level, high quality sleep should follow an uninterrupted cyclical nature that flows between varying stages of light, deep, and REM sleep (INSEP, Hausswirth, Mujika, p.100). The effect of sleep deprivation on exercise performance has been quite extensively researched, and the results strongly indicate a nearly unanimous negative effect. Maintaining your Schedule During Quarantine by Austin Both

Many people are not working, and some others who are working are doing so from home instead of going into the office. As a result, you may find your daily schedule and rhythm severely interrupted. Humans are creatures of habit and we not only prefer to maintain our routines and schedules, but we actually crave it. Aside from the preference of a comfort zone, this can largely be attributed to our circadian rhythm influencing our mood, energy, and productivity depending on the time of the day (Barnes, 2015). On the bright side, there is a simple fix that can do wonders to correct and maintain otherwise broken schedules. Exercise. Consistent exercise, especially that fit your pre-COVID-19 schedule, can be an easy fix to comfortably holding onto your daily rhythm. Furthermore, exercise occurs through a powerful two-pronged approach. The first mechanism is simple. Exercise can serve as a powerful anchor in our day. In the same way your meals might divide your workday and provide structure, exercise can have an equal or more significant effect. More importantly, exercise has a potent effect on our circadian rhythm, and from a practical point of view, this is our daily routine. For those who may be unfamiliar, circadian rhythm is a natural 24ish hour clock that manages our sleep/wake cycles as well as variable energy levels throughout the day (Sleep Foundation). Whether it is a championship game, an obstacle race with friends or just the daily workout at the gym - we want all aspects of our training, to culminate for that performance. There are many facets that make up our training including our training regimen / periodization, nutrition, mental readiness and sleep/recovery to name a few. Many of these facets have been well known and studied for years, but sleep has been the neglected aspect of training until recently. Sleep is one of the essential elements of life as a human. Why should that be any different for your "athletic life" We now know that sleep is an active physiological state, during which critical metabolic, immunologic, and cognitive/memory processes occur (Samuels). Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that sleep is imperative for proper recovery but it also affects physical performance. Physical performance, in this case, is how one performs in training, in a game or match and even in day to day life. These performance factors can range from reaction time, learning, memory tasks and sport specific elements to cognitive function, mood, and daytime sleepiness. The National Institute of Health recommends 7-8 hours of sleep per night for adults while the National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours per night. How to Avoid the Dreaded “Off Day” by Jack Carver

[Jack Carver is a Senior at the University of North Carolina and is currently enrolled in the Athletic Lab Coach Apprenticseship Program] If the science of sport has taught people anything, it's that there are several things besides how much weight is moved in training that actually enables athletes to perform at higher levels. It's complicated; you have to have the right intensity, volume of exercise, biomechanics, rest, nutrition, and so much more. A ton of effort is required to actually get it all right and perhaps the worst (and most common) way to mess it up is the dreaded "off day," (not to be confused with "rest days," which are vital to recovery). "Off day" here means a day that you do not have it in you to perform your best. You may notice it as soon as the alarm goes off in the morning or you might not realize it until you get to work. There may even be days that you don't even realize it was a bad day until the day is over, and you're about to go to sleep and you realize "I just was not productive today." Nobody likes those days; not you, not your spouse, not your boss, and certainly not your performance coach. Many times, especially in the fitness industry, it's common to hear phrases along the lines of "if you put the work in, the results will follow." If Sleep is Credit, We Are All In Debt by Houston Deck

Anytime you can wake up and say, I feel like I had a mini death. This is the best anabolic sleep we could ask for. (Parsley, 2014). Let's take a look at the #1 overlooked supplement in the world; sleep. But eight hours isn't enough. The quality and how deep of a sleep we are in is what really matters. This week I will very briefly discuss the importance of sleep and its effects on our body's hormones. I highly recommend listening to the podcast cited below for an in depth look on sleep and your bodies function. Dr. Kirk Parsley, a health optimization physician simply puts, insufficient deep sleep means insufficient testosterone production. But why is testosterone so important? Simply put, testosterone diffuses straight to the cell wall binding to protein, goes straight into the nucleus and changes DNA expression. As a result, mRNA comes out producing more protein, receptors, energy, or whatever that specific hormone does that testosterone traveled too. So when there isn't any deep sleep or lack of, we are committing anabolic suicide and throwing away everything we worked for that day. And if this continues, so does the vicious cycle.
