Summer University Soccer Prep Program begins May 24

Athletic Lab's highly successful University Prep Soccer Program will be returning this summer. Our twelve week program will take place from May 24th to August 13th. This program is designed for current and incoming collegiate soccer athletes. Athletic Lab is the official Sports Performance Training Center for the North Carolina FC and North Carolina Courage. This program allows high school and university to train like the pros! This program will focus on soccer specific and injury prevention training to prepare college athletes for the upcoming season. Each 75 minute session will develop soccer strength, speed, power, and conditioning. The program is in its ninth year and has had tremendous success preparing both high school players transitioning to college as well as current collegiate players for the rigors of the season. The training will incorporate the ball and game-like decision making to develop soccer-specific fitness that transfers to the game. The planned programming will be developed and coached by Dr. Mike Young and Austin Both, MS. Mike is the Director of Performance for the North Carolina Courage and North Carolina FC. Previously, Mike was the Head Fitness Coach of the 2012 & 2013 Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS and the Carolina Railhawks from 2009-2011. He has been an invited guest at Real Madrid, Fulham FC, Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC and has lectured around the world on soccer-specific fitness training. Austin Both is the Assistant Fitness Coach for the Courage and has extensive experience coaching some of the top high school and college players in the area. Member of the Month: ERV, Grace New, Grace Nelson

Athletic Lab is made up of a diverse group of goal-oriented and hard-working individuals. That's why we take a moment each month to highlight one (or more) of our members in our member of the month feature. For the month of February, we've chosen three of our Scholastic Athletes. Ella Reaves Vaughan (ERV), Grace New, and Grace Nelson are lacrosse players at Cardinal Gibbons. Though they have spent their high school years on the same lacrosse team, and several months (or in some cases, years) training together at Athletic Lab, they will all be going off to separate schools to continue their lacrosse careers. ERV will be attending the University of Virginia, Grace New the University of Louisville, and Grace Nelson THE Ohio State University. Enhanced Recovery Benefits of Deloading for Athletes by Alex Cassella

[Alex Cassella earned her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at SUNY Fredonia. She now works as a personal trainer and powerlifting coach in the Chapel Hill and Apex area. She is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab] Deload Deload is a term that suggests a decrease in training volume over a period of time in a training program. This is not the same as just taking a week of training off completely, rather is a tactic that coaches and athletes use to promote a stronger recovery. The ideal outcome of a deload is to produce a stronger athlete in the meso- or macro-cycle. Strength and endurance athletes can benefit from this training protocol physically and mentally. Training is a stress that the athletes place upon themselves, breaking their bodies down training session after training session. Dialing in recovery should be one of the primary focuses in their training cycle. They are going to eventually need a break, in a way that does not take them completely away from training, but allows them to come back stronger. Fatigue One of the models we can first reference to is the fitness-fatigue model (Below Figure). This gives us the basic understanding of how our bodies work in terms of training to come back stronger, faster, more powerful, etc. at the next training session. The model assures us that as long as we supercompensate, there will be an improvement in performance. The fine line though comes in that ability to recover over a period of time. Aerobic System Development for Anaerobic Dominant Sports by Michael Bruno

He is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab] The fitness industry is a fickle one with fallacies that continue long after the truth is uncovered. One fallacy I've found in the fitness community is that energy systems of the body are thought of as timed switches. Traditional thought has been during the onset of activity it's the anaerobic alactic for 15 sec, followed by the anaerobic lactic up to 1:30 and anything over two minutes would be the aerobic system. And that depending upon time demands of your sport you should train the appropriate system exclusively. On the contrary, the systems are not independent of each other, but more so dependent upon each other. The ceiling of the next system depends on the development of subsequent system development starting with the aerobic system then lactic, and finally alactic system. If you think of the energy systems as a pyramid the aerobic system would be the base. The bigger the base the larger the alactic and lactic energy systems can be. The more I read the research I feel as though the aerobic system has gotten the worst reputation possible, the ugly duckling of the energy systems. When people think of the aerobic system, they think long distance runs, fragile, non-explosive athletes. If you were to tell me that the aerobic system although produces the most amount of ATP per substrate but does so at the expense of time, I would say that it would be of no benefit of any field sport athlete.
