She will be continuing on to her Masters at Utah State also being apart of the track team for her last two years.] Speed isn't just built in the weight room—it's built through movement. An athlete can become stronger, more powerful, and more explosive, but if their sprint mechanics are inefficient, they will eventually hit a ceiling in performance. Just as proper technique is essential for maximizing strength during a lift, efficient biomechanics are critical for maximizing sprint speed. Oftentimes, a sprinter is already fast, whether you're naturally fast or not, any athlete will want to improve their speed, and to do that you must refine how they move. By analyzing sprint biomechanics, coaches can identify technical deficiencies and make small mechanical adjustments that lead to meaningful improvements in performance. It is best to understand the background, or the “why,” of a movement before doing so; that is where science comes into play. Building Effective Sprint Training Workouts for Distance Runners By Jan Alexander

He is currently taking part in the Athletic Lab Coaching Mentorship program.] Distance runners from the 5k to the Marathon have no shortage of options to guide training decisions while peaking for that next big race. Many programs provide interval workouts to challenge the aerobic pathways needed to hammer a chosen race distance whether that be a 5k or full-on 26.2 marathon distance. These interval workouts are all incredibly valuable at preparing runners for grinding out the effort to hit that next PR (personal record), while an overlooked and undervalued training adaptation for distance runners is developing pure sprint speed. Studies have proven that sprint speed is a predictor of top performance in distance running events. Sprinting improves running economy by making your top speed faster, which means that when you get faster, the pace you ran that felt hard before feels less hard. On top of that, sprint sessions are downright fun! While running track in high school, I envied the sprinters who ran for a few seconds, and stood around for what seemed like eternity. Sprint Training for Long Distance Runners by Hayden Giuliani

She is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab.] It seems like the best way to improve running long distances would be to run long distances. Endurance breeds endurance. Just like the best way to get better at a particular sport would be to play that sport. Over the years, coaches and researchers alike have begun to take a different perspective on that thought. Can doing a seemingly contradictory form of training actually improve endurance performance? If we sort through the research, it seems the answer is yes. In the article, I will break down the characteristics of endurance athletes, the types and descriptions of sprint training, and the implementation of sprint work into endurance training. Endurance athletes are well-conditioned individuals that perform long events, such as running, cycling, or triathlons. Endurance-trained persons typically exhibit certain characteristics, including, but not limited to, high maximal oxygen intake (VO2 max), efficient running economy, a high proportion of type I fibers, and leaner body composition. This simply means they can perform at a high capacity for a long period of time, yet they also tend to be less proficient at strength and power tasks. The typical training program for endurance athletes, which includes runners, cyclists, or triathletes to name a few, would include multiple longer bouts throughout a week's time. Static Stretching and Explosive Activity by Vincent Ragland

[Vincent Ragland is in his last semester as a student-athlete at East Carolina University, pursuing a Health Fitness Specialist Degree. He is currently an Athletic Development Intern at the Athletic Lab] For many years, athletes across the world were taught the importance of static stretching before explosive exercises, such as sprinting, jumping, and throwing. The thought process behind it was that static stretching was a good way to loosen the muscles before exercise and help prevent injuries. Static stretching is, in essence, holding a stationary position and stretching a particular muscle further than its resting length. Some of the more common static stretches include the butterfly stretch, which stretches the inner thighs and hips, and the seated hamstring stretch. Muscles are usually stretched to a point where discomfort is reached, and are usually about 20 - 30 seconds in length. As time went on, researchers ultimately began to discover that static stretching had no noticeable benefits in terms of power output. Instead of better preparing an athlete for athletic activity, static stretching simply elongates and relaxes the muscles, it doesn't get them ready to generate force (Lebo et. Al 2014). In fact, having a small amount of tension and tightness in the muscles helps them to contract and produce more power. By doing static stretches before power based movements, athletes are stretching some of the desired power out of their muscles. His avid interest is in applying this combined knowledge toward athletic performance.] Stop slouching! Sit up straight! Shoulders back! Good posture is important. We've all heard it at some point growing up, from our parents at the dinner table or teachers at school: Good posture is important. But what does "good posture" even mean 'Not slouching' Your Head up, back straight, doing your best Marine impression And WHY is good posture so important? The only answer I received: Because bad posture makes you look lazy. I'm betting most of you heard something similar. While well meaning, and probably true, this doesn't give posture the justice it deserves. The only question it answered was: How can I give the appearance of a hard-working, upstanding citizen? (see what I did there?) If you didn't care about your appearance or were really after that 90's Cobain look, you'd be left thinking posture is for the birds. Oh, the misinformation! Turns out that posture is the backbone of human movement and movement the backbone health. So if physical prowess, a mind like a sponge, and freedom from pain sound good to you, then posture matters. If you're a competitive athlete, it really matters. Posture can be defined as: The strategy of what muscles are doing the correct things at the correct time, to effectively cope with the forces of gravity.
