But there's one often-overlooked aspect that can have a significant impact on our mental and physical health: static stretching. While most of us are familiar with stretching as a warm-up or cool-down routine, the benefits of static stretching go beyond just flexibility. Stress Reduction One of the most compelling benefits of static stretching is its ability to reduce stress. Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on both our physical and mental health. A study (Woods et al., 2013) published in the "Journal of Behavioral Medicine" in 2013 found that participants who engaged in regular static stretching experienced a significant decrease in perceived stress levels. The gentle, sustained nature of static stretching helps activate the body's parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the production of stress hormones like cortisol. Static Stretching and Explosive Activity by Vincent Ragland

He is currently an Athletic Development Intern at the Athletic Lab] For many years, athletes across the world were taught the importance of static stretching before explosive exercises, such as sprinting, jumping, and throwing. The thought process behind it was that static stretching was a good way to loosen the muscles before exercise and help prevent injuries. Static stretching is, in essence, holding a stationary position and stretching a particular muscle further than its resting length. Some of the more common static stretches include the butterfly stretch, which stretches the inner thighs and hips, and the seated hamstring stretch. Muscles are usually stretched to a point where discomfort is reached, and are usually about 20 - 30 seconds in length. As time went on, researchers ultimately began to discover that static stretching had no noticeable benefits in terms of power output. Instead of better preparing an athlete for athletic activity, static stretching simply elongates and relaxes the muscles, it doesn't get them ready to generate force (Lebo et. Al 2014). In fact, having a small amount of tension and tightness in the muscles helps them to contract and produce more power. By doing static stretches before power based movements, athletes are stretching some of the desired power out of their muscles. Examining the Role of Stretching by Pierrie Miller

[Pierrie Miller is an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab] Stretching. It's something that most individuals are introduced to at a young age, especially those who've played sports. One of the most common forms of stretching used during the warm-up is the static stretch. Often, athletes don't question the reason why they are stretching, they are just told that it's required. This form of stretching involves holding the stretched muscle in the relaxed position for 10-30 seconds (and sometimes longer). My question is: how important is it to include static stretching in your warm-up? Specifically, when training athletes who will conduct large explosive movements through a full range of motion in their training or sport. Seemingly, it would be more appropriate to implement a warm-up routine that better prepares the athlete for those specific movements that are used during competition/training. This is where I recommend dynamic stretching, conducting movements that allow the joints to functionally pass through the full range of motion (Nadelen, 2012). Dynamic stretching better prepares the body for activity by allowing the muscles to "get warm" in preparation for exercise. Static stretching is not all bad and it can be used during the warm up on certain occasions, but only after light jogging or other movements that warm the muscles that are intended to be stretched. When Bingul (2014) tested the optimal interval time for peak performance using a dynamic stretching protocol, he found within the study that those individuals in the dynamic stretching routine group showed a 14% peak performance increase within the hamstring complex when compared to the group that did not conduct a stretching routine. Increasing Range of Motion and Flexibility with Foam Rolling by Aaron Porter

We've all heard it before and while it has been shown to boos post-workout recovery time and increase metabolic reaction within the muscle, that is only one half of the equation. What if I told you that adding foam rolling to your basic dynamic warmup is also a way of acutely increasing your overall joint Range of Motion (ROM) as well as general flexibility. For years, many medical professionals such as physical therapists and massage therapists have used this technique, referred to as Myofascial Release, to relieve patients who were suffering from tight muscles and decreased ROM (2). Now that the health promotion field is growing increasingly aware of fine tuning the human body, everyone has the luxury of self-myofascial release in the gym, at the field, or even in their own home. Before we go deeper into the benefits, lets look at the basic science behind how foam rolling works. To spare you an extensive review of neuromuscular anatomy I'll hit a few key points that are essential to understanding foam rolling and self-myofascial release. There are two types of neural receptors in the skeletal muscle tissue. The first of which is the muscle spindle that is responsible for monitoring muscle fiber length and the rate at which the length is changing. Once that muscle fiber reaches its threshold, it triggers what is called the myotatic stretch reflex which shortens the muscle fiber to prevent damage.
