Using Velocity to Auto-Regulate Training by Craig Kleinberg

[Craig Kleinberg is a Performance Coach at Athletic Lab where we regularly integrate Velocity Based Training] As strength and conditioning coaches, understanding how our athletes are responding is of utmost importance, namely understanding work intensity and fatigue management. There are many ways to monitor fatigue. Some are more intrusive, such as blood cortisol levels, while others, like Relative Perceived Exertion (RPE) and repetitions in reserve (RIR), are subjective and easy to assess, but leave room for high degrees of variability. One easy and objective method of monitoring that is becoming more popular is Velocity-Based Training (VBT). Researchers have been exploring the relationship between barbell velocity and its relationship to relative intensity, or percentage of 1 repetition max (1RM) for quite some time now (2, 6, 8, 10). Briefly, by determining the relationship between velocity and the percent of a 1RM, you can determine an athlete's Load-Velocity Profile (LVP). This can help prescribe relative training intensities on a given day, accounting for accumulated fatigue from previous workouts and it is the foundation on which velocity-based training is built upon. Before moving on, there are a few considerations that should be mentioned when discussing the use of velocity-based training. Mike Young presents at JATI Annual Conference in Japan

Athletic Lab's Mike Young recently returned from Isehara, Japan where he presented at the Japan Association of Training Instructors (JATI) Annual Convention. JATI is the largest organization for strength and conditioning coaches in Japan. Coach Young presented to over 300 coaches on Velocity Based Training at the 2 day conference. Velocity based training is strength training that implements the use of sport technology designed to track velocity and power output. Velocity based training technology has been used extensively at Athletic Lab since 2011. Velocity based training – What we need to know by Nemanja Markovi?

He is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab] I was almost finished writing this article, but then I saw Mike Young's quote on Science for sport's Instagram profile, "Applying insane forces, in the correct direction, over ridiculously short periods of time, is a trademark of the fastest people". Behind the following text is a coach with insane intention to put ridiculously useful information in the correct direction, with the belief that athletes with great performances are the trademark of the smartest coaches. Before you shoot the messenger I hope that you saw the humor in the last sentence. I also believe my respected fellow coaches when we decide to enter the field of strength and conditioning, that the biggest bang for our buck is enhanced performance and injury prevention. We can agree that there appears to be, among other things, the true need to get through planning and programming until we achieve precise individualization of training. Having this in mind, the autoregulatory training method is the right choice for coaches. As we know power is the product of force and velocity. In the last decade, thanks to numerous research findings, the role of velocity as an important parameter for estimating and monitoring the optimum intensity during strength and power training has emerged on the surface.
