Off Season Endurance Training for Team Sport Athletes By Jan Alexander

He is currently taking part in the Athletic Lab Coaching Mentorship program.] In July of this year, news broke that Lebron James, yes the four time NBA, NBA Finals MVP, and NBA Champion with 18 all-star selections, had invested in Canyon bikes. Canyon is a global leader in cycling with a mission to be “the world’s most inspiring and innovative bike company.” In 2012 the media also learned of James’s habit of commuting to American Airlines Arena for Miami Heat home games by bike, and as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers he has talked about riding the bike trails around his new hometown with friends. While these specific outings aren’t designed to elicit any aerobic training adaptation, the benefits of aerobic conditioning, even for athletes competing in speed and power based sports, is proven beneficial. Whether your athlete enjoys cycling, running, or some other endurance pursuit such as cross country skiing; the ability to strategically implement aerobic training during an off season can raise an athlete’s ceiling in their chosen sport. There are several adaptations that result from aerobic exercise that include strengthening the heart, but one of the most fundamental adaptive responses to endurance training is an increase in the aerobic capacity of the trained musculature. What’s More Important: Strength or Power?

He is currently taking part in the Athletic Lab Coaching Mentorship program.] Strength and power are often two terms that people throw around in the gym interchangeably. While both affect how well a lift is accomplished, they are not the same. Strength measures how much force your muscles can produce. Power, sometimes referred to as explosive strength can be described as the amount of work performed over a given period of time. The main factor that differentiates the two is that power accounts for the amount of time it takes to overcome the resistance. The variable of time refers to how quickly, or the speed at which an individual can execute the movement. In layman’s terms, power is the product of two key components; speed and strength. Outside of the technical differences within each of their respective definitions, the application of either strength or power heavily influences how one trains and formulates a program to favor one more so over the other. Three important variables that scope any training program and especially strength training are intensity, volume, and frequency. Intensity, simply put, is the amount of energy required per unit of time. Intensity can be measured by a handful of methods, such as RPE (rating of perceived exertion) and RIR (reps in reserve), which are two quick simple ways to gauge an individual's intensity day to day. How to Avoid the Dreaded “Off Day” by Jack Carver

[Jack Carver is a Senior at the University of North Carolina and is currently enrolled in the Athletic Lab Coach Apprenticseship Program] If the science of sport has taught people anything, it's that there are several things besides how much weight is moved in training that actually enables athletes to perform at higher levels. It's complicated; you have to have the right intensity, volume of exercise, biomechanics, rest, nutrition, and so much more. A ton of effort is required to actually get it all right and perhaps the worst (and most common) way to mess it up is the dreaded "off day," (not to be confused with "rest days," which are vital to recovery). "Off day" here means a day that you do not have it in you to perform your best. You may notice it as soon as the alarm goes off in the morning or you might not realize it until you get to work. There may even be days that you don't even realize it was a bad day until the day is over, and you're about to go to sleep and you realize "I just was not productive today." Nobody likes those days; not you, not your spouse, not your boss, and certainly not your performance coach. Many times, especially in the fitness industry, it's common to hear phrases along the lines of "if you put the work in, the results will follow." While hard work certainly is important, it's also important to make sure that the work is taking you as far as it can. The Importance of the De-Loading by Larry Strong

[Larry Strong is a Senior at East Carolina University and is currently enrolled in the Athletic Lab Coach Apprenticseship Program] Working out every single day for weeks and months going full tilt can really start to take a toll on your body. If you do any specific working out like power lifting, weightlifting, cross fit, etc., it can have a huge effect on your performance and not only because you remain stuck at plateaus but it can even cause you to regress. Having deload training built into your training will help you break through those plateaus and keep you performing at your best. What is a deload, you might ask? A deload is a short planned period of recovery (Samuels). Deloading allows you to continue training, but at a lighter intensity to allow your body and mind to heal itself and recharge so that you are ready to get back after it when your deload is over. There are several different ways to complete a deload week of training. Obviously, you could take a week off for training and do other things like going for a walk, getting massages for recovery or going to yoga to work on flexibility. As an Olympic weightlifter, I normally have built-in deload weeks in my lifting cycles every 5 to 6 weeks. During those deload weeks, the load and volume of my lifts are reduced so I can maintain my movement patterns while still allowing my body to heal, but not constantly killing myself with heavy high intensity lifting. Early Specialization by DJ Hicks

[DJ Hicks is a recent graduate of Houston Baptist University and an Athletic Development Intern at Athletic Lab] During the summer of 2014, I had the privilege of assistant coaching for the prep club track team that I once ran for, which was being led by my high school coach. Considering the age of the athletes we were working with, six to 12, the head coach did a tremendous job of creating the perfect balance between doing everything possible to prepare the athletes for potential collegiate careers in the long run, while at the same time keeping in perspective the fact that we were still working with children. Unfortunately, not all coaches and parents are able to achieve this same middle ground of understanding. Spending the summer attempting to emulate my coach's charismatic nature in the way he guided his athletes to the best of their potential at various track meets and practices, I had the distasteful experience of witnessing countless other coaches and parents howling at their children about trivial matters such as attacking a curve incorrectly or failing to execute a race strategy properly, you know, because things like that matter when you're six years old. In addition to the obvious psychological damage that took place in those instances, another huge problem was prevalent -- early specialization. As a parent, I'm sure witnessing your child excel rapidly and be much better than their peers on account of their early specificity is a great feeling, but that doesn't exclude them from the possible dangers of burnout in the long run.
