Building Effective Sprint Training Workouts for Distance Runners By Jan Alexander

He is currently taking part in the Athletic Lab Coaching Mentorship program.] Distance runners from the 5k to the Marathon have no shortage of options to guide training decisions while peaking for that next big race. Many programs provide interval workouts to challenge the aerobic pathways needed to hammer a chosen race distance whether that be a 5k or full-on 26.2 marathon distance. These interval workouts are all incredibly valuable at preparing runners for grinding out the effort to hit that next PR (personal record), while an overlooked and undervalued training adaptation for distance runners is developing pure sprint speed. Studies have proven that sprint speed is a predictor of top performance in distance running events. Sprinting improves running economy by making your top speed faster, which means that when you get faster, the pace you ran that felt hard before feels less hard. Athletic Lab Track Club compete at National level

The Athletic Lab Track & Field Club recently sent 4 athletes to the USA Track & Field Indoor National Championships. All 4 athletes competed in the indoor heptathlon. The 2022 National Championships represents the 8th time the club has qualified multiple athletes to compete. It is the 6th time, the club has had multiple athletes compete in the heptathlon. The heptathlon is a two day, 7 event men's indoor track and field event. On Day 1, athletes contest the 60m, long jump, shot put and high jump. On Day 2, athletes contest the 60m high hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m. The team placed 3rd, 4th, 8th and 9th. Team members Jack Flood and Dylan Cooper battled for top position and both finished with personal bests in the event. They were followed bu Will Eggers and Joe Sheryak. Eggers also finished with a lifetime best. The Athletic Lab Track Club is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Track & Field club for elite & emerging elite athletes. The goal of the club is to help athletes reach their potential and make World Championship and Olympic Games.

Member of the Month: Tristan York

Athletic Lab is one of the premier performance centers in the country. We take pride in our incredibly diverse community. Our members range from fitness enthusiasts looking to get in the best shape of their lives to elite professional athletes. The common denominator across all our members is that they are hard-working and goal-oriented. Each month we highlight one or more of our members in our member of the month feature. For the month of January we've selected Tristan York. Tristan is a long time member of the Athletic Lab / Cary CrossFit Comp Team. He recently completed the grueling runDisney Dopey Challenge. You can read about previous members of the month here. Name: Tristan York What city were you born in? Portland, Oregon What do you do when you’re not training at Athletic Lab (occupation, hobbies, etc)? I provide technical (escalation) support for a number of Cisco security products. I enjoy PC gaming, when time permits, and spending time with my family. We love taking trips to the mountains and Disney World. I also enjoy obstacle course racing. To date, I have completed 40 Spartan races. What’s your favorite exercise? Least favorite? My favorite exercise (at least in a WOD) is burpees...lots of them. That is one movement I can grind through without stopping. My least favorite is still nordic hamstring curls. What do you feel has been your greatest accomplishment since you started training? Mechanics of Forefoot Running by Gaby Smith

Gaby is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and holds certifications with U.S. Soccer, USAW, and USTFCCCA.] Today's market is full of many different types of running footwear claiming to help runners run more efficiently, improve performance, and reduce the likelihood of injury. Minimalist footwear claims to help runners strike more on the forefoot, while traditional footwear provides more cushioning and promotes a heel first landing. Even with the technological advancements in running shoes, up to 79% of endurance runners are injured in a given year, with almost half (46%) of these injuries being recurrences (Davis et al., 2017). While the causes of these injuries are multifactorial, one of the hypothesized reasons for the high injury rate is the altered rear foot strike pattern promoted by cushioned running shoes. This change in loading and mechanics may not provide the optimal mechanical environment for the foot and ankle compared to the forefoot striking pattern commonly seen when barefoot or wearing minimalist running shoes. Background Humans have been running for millions of years. The modern running shoe was not invented until the 1970s, so for most of evolutionary history runners were barefoot or wore very minimalist footwear like sandals or moccasins (Lieberman et al. 2010). Runners were able to cope with the impact of the foot colliding with the ground using a predominately forefoot strike before bringing down the heel. Member of the Month: Jeff Souza

Athletic Lab is made up of a diverse group of goal-oriented and hard-working individuals. That's why we take a moment each month to highlight one (or more) of our members in our member of the month feature. For the month of April, we've chosen Jeff Souza. Jeff is one of the original members of the Athletic Lab Track Club (formerly HPC Elite). You can check out our previous members of the month here. Born in Brazil, Jeff Souza first met Mike Young in 2008 at a USA Track and Field Level One course at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He became one of Mike's first athletes to train in the newly formed Athletic Lab HPC Elite group. "I'm proud to be his oldest member," Jeff says of this experience. When asked what his favorite exercise or training activity is, Jeff gave an answer indicative of the type of mindset it takes to be a top-level competitor of any sport. "There is no favorite training activity when you love and respect all of the events I need to master," he said. He does, however, enjoy sleeping to which he states is the most important activity. He added, "All exercises are welcome on my plan, there is no challenge I can't manage to learn and do my best." As for his least favorite part of training? It's controlling the food cravings he has in the afternoon. Jeff has done 30 decathlons in the past 10 years and finished all of them. Sprint Training for Long Distance Runners by Hayden Giuliani

[Hayden Giuliani recently finished her Master's degree at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where she now works as a research coordinator. She is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab.] It seems like the best way to improve running long distances would be to run long distances. Endurance breeds endurance. Just like the best way to get better at a particular sport would be to play that sport. Over the years, coaches and researchers alike have begun to take a different perspective on that thought. Can doing a seemingly contradictory form of training actually improve endurance performance? If we sort through the research, it seems the answer is yes. In the article, I will break down the characteristics of endurance athletes, the types and descriptions of sprint training, and the implementation of sprint work into endurance training. Endurance athletes are well-conditioned individuals that perform long events, such as running, cycling, or triathlons. Endurance-trained persons typically exhibit certain characteristics, including, but not limited to, high maximal oxygen intake (VO2 max), efficient running economy, a high proportion of type I fibers, and leaner body composition. This simply means they can perform at a high capacity for a long period of time, yet they also tend to be less proficient at strength and power tasks. The typical training program for endurance athletes, which includes runners, cyclists, or triathletes to name a few, would include multiple longer bouts throughout a week's time. Jason LeDoyen completes Badwater 135

Longtime Performance Fitness member and Endurance standout Jason LeDoyen recently completed the prestigious Badwater 135 race. The world-renowned 135 mile ultra marathon has a rigorous qualification standard that brings together just 100 of the world's toughest athletes to race against one another and the elements. The race starts in Badwater, Death Valley and finishes at Whitney Portal at 8,300 feet (2,530m) of elevation. The course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 14,600 (4450m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 6,100 (1859m) of cumulative descent. Whitney Portal is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States. 2017 marked 40th running of the event in which Jason finished 39th overall.

Carbohydrate Mouth Rinsing: Part One by Nick Voth

[Nick Voth is currently finishing his degree in Exercise Science from Bowling Green State University, where he competes on the Cross Country team. He is an Applied Sports Science Intern at Athletic Lab.] Developing proper fueling strategies is always a goal for coaches and athletes across all sports. Particularly, the use of carbohydrates (CHO) before and during competition can optimize performance. CHO fueling typically consists of ingestion of a commercially available food, gel, or sports drink. Other fueling strategies have been investigated, and thus, the concept of CHO mouth rinsing has surfaced. CHO mouth rinsing involves rinsing a solution in the oral cavity for a short duration and subsequently spitting it out. The first of this two-part blog will discuss implications for CHO mouth rinsing for endurance sports athletes. There are a couple potential benefits associated with CHO rinsing as opposed to ingestion. The first, and perhaps of most concern to athletes when developing a fueling strategy, is decreased gastrointestinal issues. Many athletes are hesitant to fuel just prior or during competition in fear of gastrointestinal issues that may hinder performance. Consequently, CHO rinsing may allow for an ergogenic enhancement while avoiding gastrointestinal distress. Secondly, albeit very minor, is the additional mass added to the athlete followed by ingestion of food or drink during competition. In sports where fatigue may be dependent upon an athlete's ability to move one's mass, the addition of unnecessary weight may result in earlier onset of fatigue. Therefore, CHO mouth rinsing may be the solution that many athletes have been seeking. Endurance exercise can greatly benefit from CHO mouth rinsing. Static Stretching and Explosive Activity by Vincent Ragland

[Vincent Ragland is in his last semester as a student-athlete at East Carolina University, pursuing a Health Fitness Specialist Degree. He is currently an Athletic Development Intern at the Athletic Lab] For many years, athletes across the world were taught the importance of static stretching before explosive exercises, such as sprinting, jumping, and throwing. The thought process behind it was that static stretching was a good way to loosen the muscles before exercise and help prevent injuries. Static stretching is, in essence, holding a stationary position and stretching a particular muscle further than its resting length. Some of the more common static stretches include the butterfly stretch, which stretches the inner thighs and hips, and the seated hamstring stretch. Muscles are usually stretched to a point where discomfort is reached, and are usually about 20 - 30 seconds in length. As time went on, researchers ultimately began to discover that static stretching had no noticeable benefits in terms of power output. Instead of better preparing an athlete for athletic activity, static stretching simply elongates and relaxes the muscles, it doesn't get them ready to generate force (Lebo et. Al 2014). In fact, having a small amount of tension and tightness in the muscles helps them to contract and produce more power. By doing static stretches before power based movements, athletes are stretching some of the desired power out of their muscles.
