December Member of the Month: Patrick Kypson

Patrick Kypson is the December 2025 Athletic Lab Member of the Month, recognized for a breakout season on the ATP Challenger Tour, a major jump in his world ranking, and a committed return to high-level play after injury. His consistency on court and professionalism in the gym embody the performance standards Athletic Lab strives to cultivate in every athlete. You can read about previous members of the month here. Breakthrough 2025 season In 2025, Kypson put together the best season of his professional career, highlighted by four ATP Challenger titles, including a hard-fought win over home favorite Otto Virtanen in Helsinki. He also added Challenger trophies in Bogotá, Little Rock, and Sioux Falls, stacking ranking points and proving he can win on different surfaces and in different environments.[2][6][4] Ranking rise and consistency On the back of those results, Kypson climbed from outside the top 200 at the end of 2024 to a career-best year-end singles ranking of No. 117 in 2025. That surge reflects a season where he turned a nearly even win-loss record in 2024 into an impressive 45–15 mark in 2025 across ITF, Challenger, and ATP events. The Critical Role of Sport Performance Training for High School Athletes: Building Champions While Preventing Injuries

High school represents a pivotal window of opportunity in athletic development. During these formative years, young athletes possess unique physiological advantages that make them prime candidates for significant gains in strength, speed, and conditioning. However, without proper guidance through structured sport performance training, these athletes may miss this crucial developmental window or develop movement patterns that increase their risk of injury.[1] The Foundation of Athletic Excellence Sport performance training for high school athletes extends far beyond simply improving game statistics—it builds a comprehensive foundation for lifelong fitness, injury prevention, and peak athletic achievement. Unlike traditional high school sports programs that focus primarily on skill development and team building, dedicated performance training addresses what Athletic Lab identifies as the three pillars of athletic excellence: speed development, strength training, and conditioning.[1] The Speed Development Advantage Speed training encompasses much more than running fast in a straight line. For high school athletes, comprehensive speed development includes acceleration and deceleration mechanics, multi-directional agility, and reaction time improvement. These skills translate directly to better defensive positioning, more effective offensive moves, and reduced injury risk during unpredictable game scenarios.[1] Speed training for youth athletes should follow a whole-part-whole rhythm, allowing athletes to express speed naturally, then focusing on specific technical elements before testing transfer through competition. This approach ensures that speed gains are both measurable and applicable to sport-specific situations.[2] Strength Training: The Performance Foundation Resistance training has emerged as a cornerstone of youth athletic development, with compelling evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness. A comprehensive systematic review published in Sports Health found that resistance training among at-risk youth populations can reduce injury risk by up to 68% while simultaneously improving sports performance and health measures.[3] The American Academy of Pediatrics [...]

Unlocking Athletic Potential: The Power of Sport Performance Training for High School Athletes

High school represents a critical window for athletic development. During these formative years, young athletes are primed to make significant gains in speed, strength, and conditioning that will serve them throughout their athletic careers and beyond. At Athletic Lab, we understand that comprehensive sport performance training isn't just about improving game statistics—it's about building a foundation for lifelong fitness, injury prevention, and peak athletic achievement. Why High School Athletes Need Specialized Performance Training The teenage years mark a unique period of rapid physical development. Growth spurts, hormonal changes, and neurological maturation create an optimal environment for athletic adaptation. However, without proper guidance and structured training, young athletes may miss this crucial developmental window or, worse, develop movement patterns that increase injury risk. Traditional high school sports programs, while valuable for skill development and team building, often lack the comprehensive approach needed to maximize athletic potential. This is where dedicated sport performance training becomes invaluable, addressing the three pillars of athletic excellence: speed development, strength training, and conditioning. The Speed Advantage: More Than Just Running Fast Speed training extends far beyond simply running faster in a straight line. For high school athletes, comprehensive speed development encompasses: Acceleration and Deceleration Learning to efficiently accelerate from stationary positions and safely decelerate during direction changes is crucial for sports like basketball, soccer, and football. Proper acceleration mechanics can shave tenths of seconds off sprint times—the difference between making and missing a game-changing play. Agility and Change of Direction Multi-directional speed training improves an athlete's ability to cut, pivot, and react quickly to game situations. These skills translate directly to better defensive positioning, more effective offensive moves, and reduced injury risk during unpredictable game scenarios. Reaction Time and First Step [...]

The Physical Demands of Cricket: Beyond the Gentleman’s Game

Cricket, often regarded as the "Gentleman's Game," may conjure images of leisurely matches played on sunny afternoons. However, beneath the genteel exterior lies a sport that demands exceptional physical fitness, explosive power, and endurance. From explosive sprints to sustained concentration, cricket places a unique set of physical demands on its players. In fact, a study revealed that world class cricket players are as 'fit" as their counterparts in rugby on measures of explosive power and aerobic endurance capacity. In this blog post, we delve into the intricacies of the physical challenges faced by cricketers, shedding light on the athleticism required to excel in this dynamic sport. Athletic Lab is proud to be the trusted Sports Performance Partner for Core Cricket Academy. Running Between the Wickets One of the most physically demanding aspects of cricket is the constant running between the wickets. Batsmen need to sprint short distances repeatedly, relying on agility, speed, and quick decision-making. This explosive burst of energy places significant strain on a player's lower body muscles especially the hamstrings. Fielding Fielding in cricket is as crucial as batting or bowling. Players need to cover large areas of the field, diving to stop boundaries and sprinting to chase the ball. The constant changes in direction, sudden accelerations, and decelerations demand exceptional agility and reflexes. Additionally, the ability to throw accurately and with power requires strong core and shoulder muscles. Bowling Fast bowlers, in particular, undergo immense physical stress during a match. The repetitive action of delivering the ball at high speeds can lead to injuries if a bowler's body is not well-conditioned. Bowlers require strong leg muscles for the approach and delivery stride, a robust core for stability, and powerful shoulder and arm [...]

The Importance of Sport Performance Training for Youth Hockey

Sport performance training for hockey can be a critical to youth success. Hockey is often described as the fastest game on ice. It is a demanding sport that requires a unique blend of skill, speed, power, and agility. As youth players strive to achieve their potential in this sport, the significance of sport performance training cannot be overlooked. This form of training aids in the overall development of young athletes, preparing them physically and mentally for the challenges of the game. Athletic Lab is proud to provide training for the Junior Canes youth hockey club. In this post, we'll delve into the many reasons why sport performance training is crucial for youth hockey players. 1. Physical Development Hockey is physically taxing. Players dash across the ice, battle for puck possession, and jostle with opponents, all while skillfully handling the puck. Sport performance training: Strengthens muscles: Core strength, leg power, and upper body strength are pivotal in delivering powerful shots, fending off opponents, and maintaining balance on the ice. Enhances agility and speed: Quick direction changes, rapid acceleration, and maintaining high speeds are integral in hockey. Performance training can help hone these attributes. Boosts endurance: Hockey may be a game of short, intense bursts of activity, but stamina is crucial. Conditioning workouts can improve a player’s aerobic and anaerobic capacities. 2. Injury Prevention One of the most significant benefits of performance training is its role in injury prevention. Improved muscular balance: By focusing on strengthening all muscle groups, players can reduce the risk of muscle imbalances, which are often a leading cause of injury. Better joint stability: Strengthening exercises, especially those that target the stabilizer muscles, help protect joints from sudden twists and impacts. Enhanced flexibility: [...]
