Fine Motor Development for Sport Performance by Tony Kauth

It is important to understand the benefits of developing this key mechanism in sport performance. To do so, there are general and specific exercises that an athlete can do. While the process of developing fine motor movements can seem daunting, let's explore why it can be beneficial, and some methods to improve it in the most efficient manner. Performance Potential: Since fine motor development increases the precision of movement, its benefit to sport performance can be enormous. In sports where stability is of benefit, fine motor development can not only help a gymnast stay steady, but it can also help a tactical athlete redirect force more rapidly. In sports where maximal force production is of benefit, fine motor development can help an Olympic weightlifter direct that force in the most linear and efficient manner. Even in aerobic endurance sports, fine motor development can help a distance runner more efficiently strike the ground which uses less energy that they can store for later in their event. All in all, improving fine motor development reduces wasted motion. Utilization in Training: While it may be attractive to attempt to develop technical, fine motor movements early, it's important to understand the limitations of doing so. Enhancing sport technique efficiency with bungee suspension: The tennis forehand by Gilson Sampaio Pereira

He is currently in the Coaching Mentorship Program at Athletic Lab] We often hear in the world of sports, including strength and conditioning, that "Speed is King". But if you consider that a fast movement is still a movement which is executed by hundreds of muscles activated in perfect symphony you could easily say that maybe "Technique is the actual King" and the rest originates from there. Everybody who has played a sport has felt the perfect, effortless feeling while executing a soccer shot, baseball or football throw, tennis forehand, Thai-boxing kick, golf swing sweet spot, or even a perfect sprint. The involved muscles feel perfectly synchronized with perfect timing. A Sports Performance Coach (SPC) might think that this part should be left to the actual sports coach (SC) to give specific feedback to the athlete. However, there are some tools a SPC can use to enhance specific sports technique without practicing it, ensuring we are not crossing the line between the SC and SPC. All aforementioned sports techniques have 4 things in common: You need to practice them several thousand times to achieve mastery - Technique enhances performance output as well as efficiency. The difference between a Top 10 ATP or WTA player and a regional player is proficiency in technique execution and less absolute movement speed and power output. 4 Fundamentals of Elite Olympic Weightlifting

If you've ever browsed through Weightlifting videos on YouTube, then you know how many individual styles of weightlifting there are. The problem is not watching the videos, but rather trying to match one lifters exact technique. Pyrros Dimas, who will go down as one of the best weightlifters in history, throws his head back at the top of the pull. It works for him, but it probably won't work for 99% of weightlifters. Likewise, a large majority of Chinese weightlifters drop their chin and look down when catching a snatch.Rather than trying to replicate the small details each of these elite weightlifters are doing we need look at the commonalities across all elite weightlifters and what makes them so successful.So what technique of weightlifting is best? Well, I'm not here to answer that question or really even debate it. What we can do is try to pick out a few of the main commonalities almost all successful weightlifters do.1. Keep the bar closeThis is probably the king of commonalities among elite weightlifters. Any time the bar travels away from your body the chances of you making the lift successfully decreases. Even if you do hit the lift consistently, it's taking kilos away from your potential maximum lift. A couple of things that could contribute to the bar traveling away from the body: Weight is shifting too far forward and too quickly (this usually causes the next bullet point) Moving the hips/thighs to the bar rather than the bar to the hips/thighs (banging hips/thighs on bar) The arms are too tense. Technical Mastery: Developing Strength as a Skill by Joshua Guillory

[Joshua is an Exercise Science student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is an Athletic Development Intern for Athletic Lab] As a competitive powerlifter and strength enthusiast, I am fascinated by human feats of strength in the various strength sports such as olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, strongman, and highland games. The competitors that make up these sports are outliers compared to the general population. Most individuals will never have aspirations to achieve the levels of strength these athletes push their bodies too. The discussion I will entertain today is the concept of technical mastery and developing strength as a skill. As a competitive powerlifter with six (6) years of experience under the bar and competing at national meets, the strongest lifters I've come across have endured in this sport. They have put in many hours, days, weeks, months, and years of training to achieve impressive levels of strength in the power lifts (the squat, bench press, and deadlift). When someone asks me, "My current squat is 250lbs. How do I squat 500lbs" My response is typically always the same, "Put in a decade. Train for ten (10) years and see where you end up." Most of the time I get a look of confusion and a facial expression of "Are you kidding me" I don't literally mean you need to train for a decade to get strong(er). The point I am making is if you want to really be good at the basic barbell lifts (the squat, bench press, deadlift, the press, and power clean), you will have to put in time under the bar. Pulling Speed & The Olympic Lifts

There are many things that can go wrong in the Olympic lifts. Hitting the correct positions at the appropriate times will determine much of your success in the lifts. Pulling speed is one thing you can control to make it easier to hit those correct positions. So how fast should your pull be? An answer you may commonly hear is "as fast as possible". I think that's a solid answer, but there should be one additional part - "as fast as possible within your technical ability." What does that necessarily mean? Worry about hitting the correct positions first, and only pull as fast as your technical ability allows. This top row shows some really great positions (from the floor to just below the power position). Your positions should look very similar to this before you worry about ripping the bar off the ground. From the floor to the top of your extension, the bar should be accelerating. During the pull, the speed of the bar is like shifting gears in a car. Typically, you have first through fifth gear. Gear one must precede gear two, must precede gear three, so on. This allows for seamless transitions and a gradual progression to faster speeds. In weightlifting, there are varying grades of fast with no pausing or hitching between them. If you tried to take off in fourth gear to accelerate faster, you would end up destroying your clutch and have to shift down to first gear anyway. Likewise, in weightlifting, if you started your pull in fourth gear you would likely blow past vital positions to maintain bar speed or have to slow it down to get in the correct positions.
