The Critical Role of Sport Performance Training for High School Athletes: Building Champions While Preventing Injuries

High school represents a pivotal window of opportunity in athletic development. During these formative years, young athletes possess unique physiological advantages that make them prime candidates for significant gains in strength, speed, and conditioning. However, without proper guidance through structured sport performance training, these athletes may miss this crucial developmental window or develop movement patterns that increase their risk of injury.[1] The Foundation of Athletic Excellence Sport performance training for high school athletes extends far beyond simply improving game statistics—it builds a comprehensive foundation for lifelong fitness, injury prevention, and peak athletic achievement. Unlike traditional high school sports programs that focus primarily on skill development and team building, dedicated performance training addresses what Athletic Lab identifies as the three pillars of athletic excellence: speed development, strength training, and conditioning.[1] The Speed Development Advantage Speed training encompasses much more than running fast in a straight line. For high school athletes, comprehensive speed development includes acceleration and deceleration mechanics, multi-directional agility, and reaction time improvement. These skills translate directly to better defensive positioning, more effective offensive moves, and reduced injury risk during unpredictable game scenarios.[1] Speed training for youth athletes should follow a whole-part-whole rhythm, allowing athletes to express speed naturally, then focusing on specific technical elements before testing transfer through competition. This approach ensures that speed gains are both measurable and applicable to sport-specific situations.[2] Strength Training: The Performance Foundation Resistance training has emerged as a cornerstone of youth athletic development, with compelling evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness. A comprehensive systematic review published in Sports Health found that resistance training among at-risk youth populations can reduce injury risk by up to 68% while simultaneously improving sports performance and health measures.[3] The American Academy of Pediatrics [...]

Athletic Lab’s Scholastic Sports Performance Program

Our scholastic program offers a structured and progressive training experience designed to enhance a high school athlete’s strength, speed, power, and conditioning. The program aims to help athletes maximize their potential and prepare them for the demands of high school sports and beyond. Annual Plan We provide year-round training for high school-aged athletes, following best-practice coaching methods to ensure safe and effective performance gains. The annual plan is divided into 13 four-week training cycles, known as a Macrocycle in coaching and sports science. This structure strikes the ideal balance between consistency for ongoing adaptation and variety to prevent overtraining, staleness, and boredom. Training Cycles Each annual plan consists of 13 four-week training cycles, referred to as Mesocycles by sports scientists. Every cycle follows a progressive and cyclical approach, allowing for continual improvement. Weekly Structure Each four-week cycle contains four training weeks. Within each week, athletes participate in three distinct session plans, offered over a six-day period: Session Plan 1: Monday and Tuesday Session Plan 2: Wednesday and Thursday Session Plan 3: Friday and Saturday Session Format Each 60-minute session follows a consistent structure: Dynamic Warmup: Reduces injury risk and prepares the athlete for training. Daily Assessment: Utilizes advanced sports science technology—typically seen only in professional sports—to assess jumping, throwing, or hamstring strength, depending on the day. This data helps monitor each athlete’s physical status over time. Movement Drills: Includes sprint drills or hurdle mobility exercises to improve movement efficiency and mobility. Speed & Power Training: Focuses on speed, change of direction, and/or plyometrics to develop explosive athleticism. Strength & Power: The second half of the session is dedicated to strength and power training in the weight room. Athletes receive coaching on proper technique and use industry-leading equipment and technology. Conditioning: Each session concludes with a brief but intense [...]

Resistance Training in Youth Physical Development

With the return of the Lab Rats program to our Long Term Athletic Development service continuum, it's important to highlight the benefits of exercise in general, but specifically resistance training, for children. The Role of Physical Activity and Resistance Training Childhood inactivity has reached all-time highs. In fact, obesity has reached epidemic proportions in modern society, posing serious physical and emotional risks for affected children. Recent data indicate that approximately 17.1% of youth aged 2 to 19 years are classified as obese, with an additional 33.6% at high risk of developing obesity (Ogden et al., 2014). Contributing factors include poor dietary habits and increased screen time from devices such as smartphones and tablets, which have led to a more sedentary lifestyle among children and adolescents (Andersen et al., 2017; Tremblay et al., 2011). The Importance of Physical Activity and Resistance Training for Children Physical activity, including resistance training, is a proven strategy for reducing body fat and improving overall health in children and adolescents. Research shows that structured exercise programs not only decrease adiposity but also enhance cardiovascular health, bone density, and motor skills (Faigenbaum et al., 2009; Strong et al., 2005). Despite these benefits, many parents remain concerned about the potential for resistance training to stunt growth or cause injury in young children. However, evidence indicates that when resistance training is properly designed and supervised by qualified professionals, it does not negatively impact growth or increase injury risk. In fact, such programs can have a positive influence on bone strength, motor development, and overall physical literacy (Faigenbaum et al., 2009; Lloyd et al., 2014). Long-Term Benefits for Athletic Performance and Injury Prevention Engaging in resistance training and general physical activity from a young age [...]
